A bar and grill set to open in one of the city’s former Wetherspoons has been refused permission to install a new LED entrance sign.
The move by the owners of the new Aurora Bar and Grill to install the new LED sign on the front of the Foregate Street building has been rejected by Worcester City Council.
The council’s planners said the new sign would be too bright, too big, and too prominent on one of the main buildings next to the busy Foregate Street station.
The council’s officers said the sign would be “visually obtrusive” and “unacceptably detract” from the building, neighbouring listed buildings and the wider conservation area around Foregate Street and The Tything.

The plan for Aurora Bar and Grill would have seen the old Postal Order sign removed and replaced with a six-metre LED banner that could be programmed with a rotating display of text, images, and videos.
Worcester Civic Society had also objected to the move saying it was “incompatible” with the rest of the street and would look out of place.
The council’s conservation officers had earlier warned planners when they raised concerns that the LED sign would not fit in with the rest of the historic Foregate Street.

They believed the sign “had the potential to appear over-dominant” and “could harm the visual quality of the building.”
The council then went on to ask for more information before coming to a decision.

“Based only upon the submitted information, this form of signage could be inappropriate for use in this location,” the objection from the conservation officer Paul Collins said.
“I also do not accept that the proposal will have no bearing upon public safety as, unless scrolling or moving images are prohibited, it could distract motorists.”
Wetherspoons announced it would be closing the Postal Order last year after the pub chain had put the watering hole up for sale more than 12 months earlier.
The former Postal Order pub closed in January and fresh signs quickly appeared promoting a ‘new bar and grill under new management’ that would be ‘opening soon.’
An opening date for the new bar and grill has not yet been confirmed.
