A FIRE broke out inside a tumble causing £15,000 worth of damage at a launderette in Worcester.

Flames and smoke were pouring from the machine at Posh Wash Dry Cleaning and Launderette on Martley Road, St John's.

Black smoke damage can be seen on the laundrette's wall while the fire led to two dryers being destroyed and part of the launderette ceiling now needs to be replaced.

Laundrette owner Twana Babarasell said he does not yet know the true cost of the damage but estimates it could be between £15,000 to £16,000.

Neighbours were first alerted that something was wrong at the business after smelling smoke which was coming from the property.

Mr Babarasell said: "I walked in and opened the door and it wasn’t a big fire but it was the top of the machine and escalated to the ceiling.

"I was to estimate it would be around £15k to £16k worth of damage.

"The machines are expensive and we have to bring them through the door, insulate them and do safety checks.

"Might be more as the ceilings need doing.

"It happened in the early evening, but if it was later, it could have been worse."

Mr Babarasell has owned the business for the past three years and, in that time, has revamped the shop.

However, he now fears the laundrette will have to undergo another costly renovation.

Two fire crews from Worcester were called to the at 8.53pm last night (Tuesday, September 26).

One hose reel, a CO2 extinguisher and a positive pressure ventilation were used.
