A SHOP described as "the heart of the area" has closed until further notice.
Co-op on Barker Street unexpectedly closed yesterday (Friday) until further notice.
The shop's metal shutters are down, and a sign on the door apologises for the inconvenience of the closure.
Worcester News has contacted Co-op for a comment and is awaiting a response.
One shopper said: "Co-op on Barker Street has suddenly closed.
"Metal shutters are down.
"Rumour has it, it's due to antisocial teenagers.
"What a shame for the entire community.
"It's the heart of the area and a vital resource for everyone."
Cllr Adrian Gregson said he had no idea the store had closed along with many other residents.
But he said he is aware that a gang of youths have frequently targeted the store and wonders if this is the reason behind the closure.
"There was no notice to us, but I do know a gang of lads have caused trouble, and I have heard it is a hotspot for shoplifting, and the police are aware," he said.
Cllr Gregson said he and his fellow councillor, Zoe Cookson, have been in touch with police in the past regarding the issue and the council's antisocial behaviour team.
"It (Co-op) had proved to be really good, and it is a shame if this is the end of it.
"Teens, or late teens, are causing mayhem, which is a shame for the rest of us."
Worcester News has contacted West Mercia Police regarding the antisocial behaviour concerns at the store and is awaiting a response.
The news comes after it was revealed the Co-op in Claines will remain open after rumours circulated that the store could close.
Rumours swirled on social media that Claines' little' Co-op on Ombersley Road would close earlier this year.
The rumours even led Cllr Mel Allcott, Worcestershire County and Worcester City councillor for Claines, to launch an online petition to save the Co-op, emphasising the shop was used by a lot of elderly members of the community and young families for essential items.
