A HIDDEN café in Worcester did not have to worry about opening weekends with a steady stream of customers who work in the same building.

But Lakeview Café, at County Hall in Worcester, has made a bold decision as it saw numbers dwindle as staff continue to work from home since the pandemic.

It's an exciting time for the cafe tucked away near Worcester Woods as they will be welcoming hungry customers on a Saturday (Saturday 16) for the first time.

If it is a success the bosses may take the decision to continue to open at the weekend - potentially bringing more jobs.

The café has always been open to the public, but many city residents did not know that they were able to visit the space.

Jon Whittle, operations manager of the café, is excited to see what Saturday will bring.

He said: "Before the pandemic, we were always very busy with staff at County Hall with over 2,000 capacity.

"Now that modern, flexible working has come into play, the capacity is more or less at 1,000 and will never reach what it used to be.

"We wanted to advertise more to the public to help fill the gap and remind people that we are open for everyone."

The cafe will be serving hot drinks, cakes, breakfasts and rump steak ciabatta sandwiches.

Mr Whittle also has some exciting plans for the future of the cafe as well if the trial is successful.

He said: "What is really important for us as well is to show that we are tied into the local community as a business.

"Our steaks will be provided by The Butcheress, a brilliant local butcher, and in the future we are exploring the idea of hosting mini market events which will encourage people to shop for local produce."

Mr Whittle said the feedback on social media so far has been encouraging ahead of the event this weekend.

He said: "So far we have had a lot of positive feedback from people on our social media platforms which has been great to see.

"This trial will be really important as if it is a success, we can look at potential recruitment options to regularly open on Saturdays in the future.

"We do not want to rush things and we do not want our high standards to drop, but we are certainly looking forward to the trial."

The café will be open from 8am to 3pm.
