Ensuring that your mobility equipment runs properly for many years after your purchase is a major priority for TPG Disableaids.
Properly maintained equipment reduces repair costs and enables you to move around confidently. Modern wheelchairs, lifters and other mobility aids often use complex technology that requires a certain level of expertise to maintain. TPG Disableaids have a team of dedicated, specialist engineers on hand to carry out examinations and repairs if needed.
Jayme Bacon, head of sales at TPG Disableaids, provides some expertise on caring for your mobility equipment, some essential knowledge and how TPG Disableaids can help.
Familiarise yourself with the essentials
Whilst it may not be possible to carry out home repairs due to warranty breaches and a lack of expertise, you can still take few preventative steps. Storing your equipment correctly is so important - medical mobility equipment in particular needs to be stored in a dry, clean and secure area.
Taking the time to clean your mobility aids, especially wheelchairs and scooters, can greatly enhance your comfort and the longevity of your equipment. At least once a week, take a damp cloth to wipe any dust or grime off your handlebars and the stem. Wash the deck of your scooter with warm water and a little dish soap, check the underside for signs of any damage or corrosion.
For electric chair lifts, as well as scooters and wheelchairs, thoroughly vacuum or wipe down the motor, hand control and cord to prevent dust buildup. For power wheelchairs that are used externally, it’s a good idea to check the condition of the tyres frequently. Uneven tyres can cause your chair to steer to one side, forcing you to keep it in line with the joystick.
For any major issues, be sure to call one of our trained engineers to examine your mobility aid.
