A BIZARRE video showing tiny insects hitching a ride on a larger insect has been captured in a county village.

The video, captured by Christina Emmerton, shows a yellow and black insect on the floor inside her home, with lots of tiny insects crawling on its back.

According to the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, the yellow and black bug is known as a Sexton, or burying, beetle, and the tiny insects are mites.

Wendy Carter, of the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, said that the mites are "hitching" a ride from the beetle.

She said: "The mites are simply hitching a lift from one place to another and this is a relatively common occurrence where one species uses another to get from a to b.

"They don’t usually cause any harm to the beetle unless there are so many of them that the beetle itself can’t fly or walk easily.

"There are several species of sexton beetle and they carry out an important recycling role, living off and breeding in carcasses.

"Males and females, for example, will bury a body and the female will then lay her eggs on it; when the eggs hatch, the larvae eat the carcass and recycle it into nutrients for other organisms.

"It may sound a little gruesome but it’s an important part of the natural world and its systems."
