OBSERVANT viewers of Prime Minister's Question have noticed MPs were wearing wheat on their lapels.

Across Parliament MPS of all parties were wearing wheat - leaving viewers wondering why.

The reason is to back British Farming Day (September 13), an initiative driven by the National Farmers Union (NFU).

In its eighth year the day looks to highlight the work of British farmers and that the sector needs support during the cost-of-living crisis with labour problems and supply-chain issues impacting  the industry.

Over the years, some of the UK's most senior politicians - including former prime ministers - have donned the wheat to show their support.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wasn't wearing one but Labour's Leader of the Opposition, Keir Starmer did during the Commons session.

The NFU has its own West Midlands regional team. On its website the branch says: "The West Midlands is a vibrant farming and food area, fuelling the country from the nation’s heart and delivering for the economy, jobs, environment and our communities.

"We demonstrate the value of the region’s farm-to-table supply chain and work with regional food businesses and our MPs to achieve an environment in which farming, food and drink businesses can thrive. "
