A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and dangerous driving after an M5 crash where a car roof had to be cut off.

West Mercia Police were called at approximately 9.20 pm yesterday (Tuesday, September 5) with reports of a crash on the M5 heading southbound between junctions seven and eight.

Officers attended to find two vehicles involved, with one of the drivers having fled the scene.

Officers found the man and he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving and the other driver was taken to hospital with injuries.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service had to cut the other driver from his car to release him from the wreckage.

Two from Worcester, one from Upton-upon-Severn Fire Stations and the incident command unit from Ledbury all attended.

A spokesperson said: "Three Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews were called at 9.28pm on Tuesday, September 5, to an RTC involving a small vehicle on the M5 Southbound between junctions seven and eight.

"The incident involved two cars on the motorway which was closed southbound. One male casualty in his 20s was extricated from his vehicle using Holmatro cutting equipment and small tools.

"He and another male casualty were handed over to the ambulance service who attended along with police. The incident was marked as pending closure at 10.46pm."

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer, the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car and a MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the scene. 

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a two-car RTC on the southbound carriageway of the M5 at 9.24pm.

"A man and a woman were treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Worcester Royal Hospital.

"Two further patients were assessed and discharged at the scene."
