A bar and grill set to open in one of the city’s former Wetherspoons has asked for permission to install a new sign.
The owners of the new Aurora Bar and Grill have submitted a planning application to Worcester City Council asking for permission to install the new LED sign on the front of the Foregate Street building.
However, conservation officers at Worcester City Council have raised concerns that the LED sign would not fit in with the rest of the historic Foregate Street.
The council’s conservation officer said he believed the sign “had the potential to appear over-dominant” and “could harm the visual quality of the building.”

The council has since asked for more information before making a decision.
“Based only upon the submitted information, this form of signage could be inappropriate for use in this location,” the objection from the conservation officer Paul Collins said.
“I also do not accept that the proposal will have no bearing upon public safety as, unless scrolling or moving images are prohibited, it could distract motorists.

“Lacking the above information regarding the installation and proposed use of the proposed sign, I must express an objection to it. However, if provided with the necessary information, I would have no overall objection.”
The highways department at Worcestershire County Council raised no objections – as long as the brightness of the LED sign could be controlled.
“There is no objection in principle to the proposed signage to replace the existing and it is understood that the signage will have static images which will not be moving although can be changed, for example, to display seasonal greetings and this should be controlled,” the county council said.

Wetherspoons announced it would be closing the Postal Order last year after the pub chain had put the watering hole up for sale more than 12 months earlier.
The former Postal Order pub closed in January and fresh signs quickly appeared promoting a ‘new bar and grill under new management’ that would be ‘opening soon.’
An opening date for the new bar and grill has not yet been confirmed.
