POLICE have said enquiries into how a fire that destroyed a three-storey terraced building in Droitwich began are ongoing. 

Firefighters were called to a house fire with reports that people were trapped inside the building this morning (August 29) in Meadow Road, Droitwich.

Everyone managed to escape the blaze which broke out at about 1.10am.

The three-storey terraced building, around 6m by 12m, was completely destroyed by the fire after it spread and stopped at roof level. 

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said a paramedic officer and HART paramedic attended the scene but on arrival there were no patients requiring treatment.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) spokesperson confirmed there had been no casualties. 

The HWFRS spokesperson said: "Six crews – two from Worcester, two from Droitwich, one from Wyre Forest and one from Bromsgrove Fire Stations – plus the aerial ladder platform from Worcester Fire Station were called to a house fire with persons reported in Meadow Road, Droitwich.

"All services to the property were isolated.

"Eight breathing apparatus teams were used, with three hose reel jets and two main jets deployed.

"Crews searched the premises and confirmed all persons were accounted for. There were no casualties.

"A Worcester Fire Station crew left the incident with the police at 9.12am after a reinspection. They checked for hot spots and also checked neighbouring properties."

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Police were called to a property on Meadow Road in Droitwich following reports of a fire around 1.20am this morning. 

"Enquiries into how the fire started are ongoing. No one was inside of the property at the time of the fire."

Police and fire crews remained at the home throughout the morning.

There was still a strong smell of smoke in the area and the area was very wet from the dampening down. 

At the rear of the property, the extent of the damage could be seen with broken and blackened window frames and damaged brickwork. 

The top floor has been completely destroyed with large sections of the roof missing and scorch marks from the flames visible.

National Grid workers were also at the scene as the front of the property was being blocked off.
