Roadworks will be taking place outside the home of a Worcester artist - just as he opens up his studio to members of the public.

And David Birtwhistle could be forgiven for feeling a bit of déjà vu, as the same thing happened last year.

Mr Birtwhistle, a painter based in Bransford Road, St John’s, is taking part in Worcestershire Open Studios, an event that sees artists across the county open up their homes and studios to members of the public.

But he is worried the roadworks will make it difficult for people to visit.

“For the second year in a row, the highways department are closing the road at the time I am taking part in the Worcestershire Open Studios event,” he said.

“It’s a bit irritating. We hadn’t been notified in advance. I don’t know how critical it is that the work is taking place when it is because we haven’t had any information.

“Hopefully we’ll get quite a lot of people doing [Worcestershire Open Studios] on foot, but to do so would be quite strenuous. It’s likely to be people who live locally, you’d expect most people to be coming by car.

“I’m hoping that, if the roadworks finish on time, they’ll only overlap the dates I’m doing Worcestershire Open Studios on way day, but these things have a habit of overrunning a bit.”

Mr Birtwhistle will be exhibiting his work at 61 Bransford Road this weekend (August 19 and 20) and from Friday, August 25 to Bank Holiday Monday (August 28), from 11am to 5pm each day.

“The event is an opportunity to meet artists and see more than just something hung on a wall in a gallery,” he said.

“It’s a good event and it’s gradually gathering pace - the festival is going on for longer this year than it used to.

“I’ll be showing my stuff at the side of my house. I will be there doing bits and pieces and there’ll be a few unfinished paintings so people can see how I do it.”

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “The works are outside the location referred to, and have been scheduled within school holidays to minimise traffic disruption.

"They were requested for this area by a developer. Advance warning signs have been in place ahead of the works starting on Monday. The works are on schedule to be finished next Friday, after which all traffic management and signage will be removed.”
