A 20-YEAR-old man jailed for taking part in a riot in Bristol went on a rampage in Worcester after moving to the city.

Kain Simmonds, who is now back in jail, claimed to magistrates the offences were being "made worse" because of his criminal history.

Eleanor Peart, prosecuting, said the offences took place on July 27 when Simmonds was living at the Foresters YMCA accommodation, which supports vulnerable young people, in Worcester.

A manager checked CCTV at the accommodation which showed Simmonds' rampage had included upturning a washing machine and dryer and breaking the cables, putting holes in the plaster of walls, and smashing kettles, a garden planter and a resident's computer.

The prosecutor said Simmons, who appeared on videolink from HMP Brinsford to court, put "extensive" graffiti on the walls including writing "I will kill myself".

Miss Peart said Simmons crime had an impact on other residents who were trying to make a fresh start, including not being able to wash their clothes for a period.

Miss Peart added Simmons had previous convictions for criminal damage and arson.

In 2021 Simmonds -  who at the time was 18 and from Springfield, Birmingham - was jailed for three years and three months at a young offenders institution for his part in a riot in Bristol city centre.

The court heard Simmonds had now been recalled to prison.

Simmons, defending himself, said: "There is nothing in particular I want to say.

"You shouldn't drink in the state of mind (I was in).

"I went back to the home to apologise to everyone.

"I think it has been made worse than it actually was because my criminal history is not good when I was younger."

Before sentencing the court heard Simmonds owed more than £1,800 to the courts from past offending and there was no figure on the financial amount of damage caused provided to the police.

Jacqueline De Sousa, chairman of the magistrates bench, said due to those circumstances, and that Simmons was back in prison, they had decided to give Simmons a two-year condition discharge.

He was also ordered to pay £32 victim surcharge to be added to the outstanding money he owes.

The case was heard at Worcester Magistrates Court on Tuesday, (August 16).

Simmonds role in Bristol riot

The initially peaceful protest in Bristol in March 2021 descended into chaos with police van set alight and dozens of officers injured.

Simmonds was jailed for spraying an aerosol in the direction of an officer’s face, kicking officers’ shields, kicking the window of a police station and repeatedly striking a police van with an officer’s baton.
