A plan to install a new 5G tower in Tolladine has become the latest to be submitted to the council.

Cignal Infrastructure has asked Worcester City Council for permission to install the 17-metre 5G tower in front of Altaf’s Balti in Tolladine Road, Worcester.

Several locations in Wolsey Close and Ronkswood Hill, Merton Close and Avon Road were snubbed for a number of reasons including the hazard it might cause for drivers, too many overhead cables, and because it would be too close to homes.

“There is an acute need for a new base station to provide effective service coverage,” Cignal said. “And in this case, the height of the proposed street pole is the minimum required to bring the benefits of 5G to this area.”

Highways officers at Worcestershire County Council have raised no objections to the plan saying the location was acceptable.

Worcester City Council has turned down a number of applications for 5G towers across the city in recent months including in Warndon and St Peter’s.

Planners rejected a separate move by then-named CK Hutchinson to install a 15-metre 5G pole in Wainwright Avenue in Warndon saying it would be “visually obtrusive.”

The planning application was submitted just a fortnight after a move to install a 5G tower less than a mile away on the corner of Windermere Drive and Keswick Drive.

An 18-metre 5G tower in front of St Peter’s Baptist Church was also turned down after the plan drew criticism from churchgoers who said the ‘eyesore’ structure would spoil views of one of the estate’s “most architecturally significant buildings.”

The city council also rejected a plan to build a 5G tower in Grenville Road in Dines Green, another 5G tower at the junction of Ombersley Road and Droitwich Road near Gheluvelt Park and a plan for a 5G tower next to County House in St Mary’s Street near Worcester Crown Court.

However, planners did approve a plan by Cignal to build a 16-metre 5G tower on the corner of Bransford Road and Malvern Road in front of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Primary School in St John’s.
