A MASSIVE crack in a retaining wall beneath a major new multi-storey housing development has been mysteriously filled in.

The huge wall crack beneath the high-rise Sherriff's Gate project has been patched up so it is now hard to see - but is still clearly visible when you get close up.

We have previously reported how highways engineers from Worcestershire County Council have inspected the wall and have said a collapse is 'unlikely'.

They looked at the wall on Monday, July 21 and said the crack did not appear to have deteriorated since an earlier inspection last summer.

The jagged diagonal crack is on a brick retaining wall at the junction of Tolladine Road and Sherriff Street beneath the Sherriff's Gate project which is under construction in Worcester. The crack extends all the way up the wall in a zigzag.

However, the crack has now been filled in and patched up, making it far more difficult to see, even when you get close to it.

A spokesperson for the developer said: "Elliott Group can confirm that they are not responsible for the recent works on the discussed crack at Tolladine Road. Our commitment to safety remains, and we will continue to monitor the area to ensure the well-being of both the development and the community."

Contracts manager Scott Blackburn has described the cracks as 'weathered' and 'present for many years' after an earlier structural survey was carried out.

We have approached Worcestershire County Council to see if they are responsible for the patch-up work but they have yet to provide a comment.

The jagged crack was visible in the brick retaining wall beneath the multi-storey Sherriff's Gate project which is under construction and looms large over the junction of Sherriff Street and Tolladine Road.

The crack, now filled with grey filler, appears to run right up the side of the wall near the Sherriff Street sign from the pavement to the summit above which the £150 million housing project sits perched.

However, developers say there has been 'no movement' and the situation is being monitored.

Work started on the project last July and, when finished, it will bring hundreds of new apartments (including affordable housing), a hotel, gym, multi-storey car park, food and beverage outlets, a multiscreen cinema and ten-pin bowling to the city.

Stennard Harrison, managing director of Sherriff’s Gate Developments, said in a recent statement: “A lack of suitable housing has troubled Worcester for far too long, leaving many individuals and families struggling to find suitable attainable accommodation."
