A city centre street party has been forced to cancel over fears it could attract too many people - but the organisers are vowing to come back bigger and better next year.
Neighbourhood had organised a street party in Worcester’s Copenhagen Street on Saturday (August 12).
But the council turned down the licence over fears it would prove too popular.
However, there are no hard feelings from the organisers and owners of Neighbourhood who are working with the council to build a bigger event next year.
Clint Webbe, co-owner of Neighbourhood, said: “We applied for licensing for it which was denied, however, it’s more that the event could draw way more people than anticipated due to it being a city centre event.
“We didn’t want to run the risk of overcrowding, so the council suggested we put it on hold and work together to organise a bigger event for 2024.
“We feel fine about the refusal, as we want to make sure that everything runs safely for the community and everyone involved.”
The free, family-friendly street party, which would have played host to DJs, street food, live art and entertainment, also featured Copenhagen Street bars Tripel B and the Oil Basin, a boutique craft fair at the Kiln, artist Estée Angéline, pole dancer and instructor Imogen Gunter and the Jungle Club Plant Shop which has recently relocated to Pump Street.
With the street party cancelled, the DJs will now be setting up in Pizza Freakz above Hop Lord’s Tap Room and Bottle Shop in nearby Pump Street so the event was not a total write-off.
Clint Webbe and Matt Haley of Neighbourhood called time on their deli last month shutting the doors at their Reindeer Court spot after four years – saying the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic, which ‘had not been very kind’, had forced their hands.
But this did not mean the end of Neighbourhood with the pair moving the business into the back of a bright yellow former AA van and hitting the road to venues and festivals across the country, and eventually, the two hope, parts of Europe.
