THE first part of a huge makeover of a town shopping centre has been revealed.
The work would see St Andrew’s Square Shopping Centre in Droitwich freshened up with new entrances, signs and lights as well as new trees, plants, decking and seating areas.
The plans also include moving three repurposed shipping containers into the shopping centre to rent out.
The work will create a “more intimate and welcoming atmosphere” according to the planning application.
The first part of the work to ‘spruce up’ the tired-looking shopping centre would form part of wider plans which would eventually involve demolishing much of the old shopping centre to make way for new units, shops, bars and restaurants, office space and around 250 apartments.
A statement included with the application said the facelift would make St Andrew’s Shopping Centre “more engaging and welcoming.”
“This application is focused on updating and rejuvenating the existing units and pedestrian routes within St Andrews Shopping Centre, creating stronger links with the remaining town centre and providing engaging and welcoming areas for visitors,” it said.
“The units on site will all largely remain as existing, with any affecting works to be limited to updates along the unit facades.
“The wider masterplan for the site proposes the regeneration of St Andrew’s Square including the demolition of existing buildings on site and replacement with a mixed-use scheme to replace the existing retail on site with new retail space and new foods and beverage offerings, leisure uses, potentially new office floor space with residential accommodation on upper floors; new public realm and pedestrian thoroughfares.”
Last year, Wychavon District Council revealed its 20-year plan for Droitwich town centre which it hopes to turn into a “vibrant town with leisure, wellness and ‘spa’ at its heart - known for its unique salt heritage and its quality outdoor brine lido.”
The council said this would be achieved by developing the town centre with an improved St Andrew’s Square shopping centre at the heart of the work.
You can view the plans by visiting Wychavon District Council’s website.
The application number is W/23/01441/FUL and consultation ends on September 1.
