A PLAN to build a new home in a garden has been criticised by neighbours.

The plan by Nigel Lloyd would see a new two-storey home built next to The Hedges in Barneshall Avenue off Bath Road in Worcester.

A detached double garage would also be built next to the home if approved.

Several neighbours in Barneshall Avenue have come out against the plan with objections to Worcester City Council who said their gardens would be overshadowed and their privacy would be disrupted if the home was built.

One objector, Valerie Kennewell, said she moved to Barneshall Avenue to live near nature and wildlife and the new home would “tower” over her bungalow next door.

“The dwellings in Barneshall Avenue are predominantly bungalows with large gardens that form a corridor for a wide range of wildlife,” she said in an objection to Worcester City Council.

“The loss of the garden at The Hedges would be a loss of habitat for the abundant birds, insects, amphibians and mammals we see daily.

“Those of us living here chose to do so because of its country-like feel. We did not want to live in a housing estate. The proposed house is out of character and out of proportion and would tower above number 7, in particular.”

Another objector, Elizabeth Jones, also of Barneshall Avenue, said the new home would be a “blot on the landscape.”

“The proposed development site is directly opposite three bungalows and to the west of the site are further bungalows leading along the avenue,” she said.

“This two-storey modern construction, bearing in mind its height and scale will most definitely have an overbearing effect on its neighbouring properties and would be a blot on the landscape.”

A statement included with the application from Boughton Butler which represents Mr Lloyd said: “The proposal development height has been considered and it is not deemed to be overbearing on the adjacent bungalow given the distance between the two properties.

“Due to the proposal sited with a south-facing rear garden, adequate levels of sunlight and daylight will be provided to the property throughout the day.”
