CARS are being vandalised and stolen from in two Worcester suburbs according to a city councillor.

Cllr Jabba Riaz, Worcester City Councillor for Cathedral Ward, has said that residents of Diglis and Fort Royal are concerned following a "recent spate of incidents" where vehicles have been damaged.

He said that in both areas, cars have been targeted and their windows have been smashed, with contents stolen from within.

Cllr Riaz said: "I ask residents to remain on high alert, the recent spate of break-ins and vehicle damage is worrying, and it seems to be a repeating trend across the city.

"I have been in touch with the local policing team to advise them of this and they are carrying out patrols and following up on incidents.

"I will be working closely with the police to identify ways in which we can catch these thieves and vandals.

"I ask the public to remain vigilant, to hand over any footage or evidence that can help catch culprits.

"In the meantime, I urge car owners, not to leave anything valuable in their cars for opportunistic thieves like cards, cash and other items."

Inspector Tanya Beckett, from the Worcester City Safer Neighbourhood team, downplayed suggestions of "significant" increases in car break-ins and vandalism but acknowledged there were issues.

She said: “While we have not seen a significant increase in thefts from vehicles, we’re aware of concerns and officers are carrying out enquiries into a small number of reports.

"We would ask members of the public to work with us and help in our efforts to prevent a car being broken into in the first instance.

"Ensuring cars are locked when they’re left unattended and valuable items are not left on display can all help.

"If your vehicle is broken into or you think someone has attempted to break into your vehicle, please report this to us via our website."
