A by-election will be held in the city this week following the death of a long-serving councillor.

Polls will be open between 7am and 10pm on Thursday, July 20 for residents in the Nunnery ward in Worcester, who will be choosing who they want to represent them on Worcester City Council.

Elaine Willmore will be battling to keep hold of the seat for Labour and she will be up against former city mayor Allah Ditta for the Conservatives, Scott Butler for the Liberal Democrats and independent candidate David Carney.

The three-councillor ward is currently home to Labour councillors Basharat Ali and Pat Agar.

Labour councillor Simon Cronin died on May 9 after a “short illness” – just five days after he came out on top in the polls in the Nunnery ward.

It was the third time Cllr Cronin had been elected to represent the ward after first winning in 2007.
