DOG mess and discarded vapes were amongst the rubbish cleared during a soggy litter pick at a waste hotspot which had become a 'horrible' eyesore.

The litter pick on Sunday cleared piles of rubbish from Gamekeepers Drive in Warndon, Worcester, and continued despite the heavy rain.

During the pick by Labour councillor Jill Desayrah and resident Jack Walker, the pair collected empty drinks cans, vaping sticks, covid masks, beer bottles, sanitary products and bagged dog waste that had built up.

The regular monthly Labour Party litter pick in Warndon concentrated on the small open space next to the fencing of the Fairfield Centre.

Cllr Jill Desayrah, together with local resident Jack Walker, were finally able to clean up the eyesore, separating landfill from recycling.

The two most unusual items found were a padded high-vis jacket and a large pallet.

The jacket was described as being perfectly sound, except for being 'utterly filthy', but the pallet could not fit into Cllr Desayrah’s Toyota Yaris and had to be left for land owner Citizen to collect.

Cllr Desayrah, who has arranged for pop-up tips to come to Warndon twice this year, said: "It illustrates the need for regular, free bulky waste collections in the area, because so few residents have large cars and the paid-for collection service is beyond the means of many."

She added: “I'm very grateful to Jack for helping here. This litter pick was hard to access, difficult and unpleasant to collect and we got thoroughly rained on into the bargain. But now this horrible space is cleared and I hope that people will stop littering there. I understand that it isn't a practical spot to install a standard litter bin, but I hope that my request for a dog waste bin might be successful.”

Jack Walker, 21, of Sudgrove Close, said: “The rainstorm in the middle of this pick was unfortunate as we had no protection against the lashing rain and got completely soaked. But that did not stop us finishing the job.”

The Litter Picks in Warndon are open for anyone to join. The next is on August 20, meeting at 11am on Chedworth Close.
