A petition has been launched to “save” St John’s Library as it faces undergoing "devastating" changes.

The county council is planning to make St John’s a part of its Libraries Unlocked scheme, which is designed to keep libraries open for longer hours.

But St John’s councillors are concerned about the changes, which will also mean the library will be unstaffed for periods of the day.

Councillors Richard Udall, Robyn Norfolk, Matt Lamb and Sue Smith have started a petition calling on Worcestershire County Council to abandon its plans for unstaffed libraries.

At the time of writing, more than 500 people had signed the petition.

“The proposal to extend Libraries Unlocked to St John’s is devastating,” said Cllr Udall.

“It will mean longer opening hours, but with no staff. It will be staffed for a maximum of just two hours a day, outside those two hours it will only be accessible if you swipe a library card at the door.

“This discriminates against young people as anyone under 16 cannot have a library card which will gain them access, it also discriminates against non-library members, who want to attend to read a book, join a club, get online or get some advice.”

Cllr Udall said the library is “not just a place with books” but a community centre hosting a range of clubs and events, as well being a warm place in winter.

“All of this work is facilitated by the librarians,” he said.

“Without them being present the library will wither on the vine. People depend on their work, the security they offer and the advice they give.

“The reaction to the news has been overwhelming, I have yet to hear from a single resident who supports the proposal.

“St John’s councillors will fight to save the library and we will do all we can to help.

“The work to transfer libraries into Libraries Unlocked will cost over half a million pounds, in new security, machinery and doors.

“It’s a waste of public money, which could be spent on new books, magazines, newspapers and equipment.

“We will take our petition to the very top. If necessary, we will march to County Hall to deliver it in person. County Hall does not know best.”

Marcus Hart, the council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “Our Libraries Unlocked roll out means we are able to keep our libraries open for longer hours which gives much more flexibility for visitors.”

Cllr Hart said Libraries Unlocked would be rolled out to include St John’s in the autumn.
