BLACK smoke billowed over Warndon Villages after a large fire broke out.

Two Worcester and Droitwich Fire Station fire crews were called to Offerton Lane in Worcester after undergrowth caught alight.

Offerton Lane was closed off while firefighters tackled the blaze with two hose reel jets augmented from a hydrant.

A large black smoke cloud could be seen across the Warndon area and was filmed and photographed by shoppers and residents.

The fire was an estimated 8 meters by 4 meters, involving undergrowth, tyres and various bits of rubbish.

Damping down is now taking place, and a thermal imaging camera has also been used.

No casualties were reported, and the road reopened around an hour after the incident.

West Mercia Police was informed of the incident but did not attend.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Three Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews – two from Worcester and one from Droitwich Fire Stations – were called at 16:08 on June 27 to a fire in the open at Offerton Lane, Warndon, Worcester.

"A fire measuring around 8m by 4m involving undergrowth and tyres was extinguished using two hose reel jets augmented from a hydrant.

"Damping down is now taking place, and a thermal imaging camera has also been in use.

"Police have been informed but are not yet on the scene.

"There are no casualties."

Fire crews left the scene at around 4.50pm.
