A drive-thru coffee shop could soon be opening in a city retail park according to new plans.
A planning application asking for permission to build the new drive-thru on part of the car park at Elgar Retail Park in Worcester has been submitted by Legal and General.
Drawings submitted with the planning application do not reveal what business would be opening the drive-thru but the drawings are similar in design to Starbucks throughout the country.
Planning consultants Carney Sweeney, which is acting as the agent on behalf of the coffee chain, also regularly works on applications to open new Starbucks drive-thrus.
The drive-thru for a new coffee shop would be built in the middle of the Blackpole Road retail park, resulting in a loss of 24 parking spaces and a number of trees.
The application said that 11 of the 35 lost car parking spaces would be replaced and new trees would be planted elsewhere to compensate for the loss.
The coffee makers would be joining other major chains on the retail park such as Next, Homebase and Dunelm and fast-food chicken restaurant KFC which also runs a late-night drive-thru.
A statement included with the application said: “The proposed scheme will comprise the development of a new coffee store drive-thru retail unit to be located in the existing car park which will result in a loss of 35 spaces, although 11 additional spaces will be provided elsewhere within the car park leading to an overall loss of 24 spaces.
“The opening hours of the unit has not been confirmed, however, the application seeks unrestricted trading hours. This reflects the arrangement will all retail units, and the KFC on Elgar Retail Park.”
Last month, coffee chain Costa announced it was set to move into another unit in in Worcester High Street which was last used by Paperchase before the stationary shop went into administration.
Starbucks recently revealed plans to open a new 24-hour drive-thru at Pinvin Services off the village’s busy A44 road near Pershore.
You can view the plans by visiting Worcester City Council’s website. The application number is 23/00507/FUL and consultation ends on July 11.
