A CRASH on the M5 between an HGV and a car was said to be caused by a lorry driver suffering a "medical episode".

Two lanes were closed on the M5 between junction 4a and junction 5 heading southbound this afternoon following the crash, causing a build-up of traffic.

Although no serious injuries were reported, West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed the driver of the HGV is believed to have suffered a "medical episode".

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car on the southbound carriageway of the M5, near junction four, at 4.13pm.

"One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. On arrival, we discovered one patient, a man, who was the driver of the lorry.

"Crews were told he had suffered a suspected medical episode at the wheel and following treatment, he was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch."

West Mercia Police and National Highways also attended the crash.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "We were informed of a road traffic collision on the M5 southbound between Junction 4a and 5 shortly after 4pm today.

"The accident involved a car and a lorry but there were no serious injuries.

"The Highways Agency attended the scene as did the ambulance service to carry out checks on the driver of the HGV.

"The inside lane of the motorway was blocked by the accident."

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service are not in attendance at the incident.
