THE DATE of a by-election has been announced following the death of councillor Simon Cronin. 

Tributes poured in for cllr Cronin after he died less than a week after he was re-elected as the Nunnery ward's city councillor for the third time.

His death in May came just days after he was re-elected to his seat in Nunnery Ward, with a majority of 330 votes.

He held the Nunnery seat for the past 16 years, having been first elected in 2007.

He did at the age of 64 after a short illness.

Colleagues and loved ones described Cllr Cronin as hardworking and formidable after his sudden death.

Worcester City Council has announced nominations for the empty seat will be open from Thursday (June 15) until 4pm Friday, June 23. 

If more than one nomination is received the poll will be held on Thursday, July 20 with votes being counted that night at The Guildhall.

City Council expects to publish the official Statement of Persons Nominated on Monday, June 26.

Poll cards will be despatched on Friday, June 30 and the last date to register to vote is 11.59 on Tuesday, July 4.

The deadline for postal applications is Wednesday, July 5 and postal votes will be despatched on Friday, July 7. 

And polling day will take place between 7am-10pm on Thursday, July 20.

Receipt of the emergency proxy vote for applications takes place on Thursday, 20 July at 5pm.

Cllr Cronin was described as “respected, well-liked and the calm voice of reason” as well as a “wonderful friend” by colleagues with warm tributes paid from across the political spectrum.

Worcester City Council’s managing director David Blake said: "His warm and friendly approach will be greatly missed by everyone,” he added. “It is incredibly sad that Worcester has lost such a kind and dedicated politician.”
