HEAVY goods vehicles will no longer be able to drive down a narrow road after claims people's cars were getting scratched and marked.

Lorry drivers were using Nelson Road in St John's as a rat run to avoid traffic in St John's - but people living in the street claim their cars were being damaged in the process.

Councillor Richard Udall, Worcester City and Worcestershire County councillor for St John's Ward has now asked or HGVs to be prevented from driving down the narrow road, off Comer Road.

Cllr Udall said frustrated residents had contacted him with their concerns.

One resident told a Worcester News reporter cars had been getting damaged by larger vehicles.

They said: "Cars are constantly getting scratched or marked by larger vehicles when travelling down this road.

"This can be anything from big delivery vehicles to builders to vans."

Cllr Udall said: "Residents living in Nelson Road were fed up with a growing problem of vehicles, especially goods vehicles, trying to avoid the traffic in St John's and hoping they could cut through by going down Nelson Road.

"They soon discovered that it was a no-through road, but it also does not have a turning head, forcing them to back up and reverse back to Comer Road, often causing damage to parked cars in the process.

"We believe it was mostly people who are not local and are following a sat-nav error which could have wrongly showed Grosvenor Walk, a narrow footpath at the end of Nelson Road, as a through road.

"Hopefully, this additional signage will avoid this from happening again".

A sign that previously informed pedestrians of the route to follow to access the city centre from Hylton Road, by walking through Grosvner Walk, was removed in the process of installing the new sign.

However, another resident living in Nelson Road said they have never noticed the issue.

"We have never really noticed any issues with HGVs coming down here.

"We have seen building materials delivered a lot but they often stop at the top of the road instead of driving all the way down."
