Aldi agrees to buy Pershore Market and build new supermarket

Aldi has agreed to buy the historic site with plans to build a new supermarket now in progress.

The market's owners are liaising with the remaining traders, and business will continue until the end of 2023.

Oliver Mackaness, director at Pershore Market, said: “We have always strived to do our best for Pershore Market, which was started by my father over 40 years ago.

“We have seen a number of traders depart us in recent years, with the difficult economic backdrop making it challenging for both traders and the Market itself to operate a viable and sustainable business model.

“We feel it is time for the site to be given a new lease of life, and we feel that Aldi is the ideal business to deliver a store that meets the needs of modern-day Pershore.”

Pershore Marke has been up for sale for four years and rumours of it being demmolished to make way for an Aldi began circulating earlier this year.

However, a spokesperson for the market said at the time that these rumours were nothing more than "Chinese whispers" and stated that the market would not be closing down.

Simon Glover, real estate director at Aldi, added: “We are aware of the significant demand for an Aldi store in Pershore and we strongly feel that this site presents a unique opportunity to create a new supermarket in a town centre location for local residents.

“An Aldi store in Pershore will improve choice for shoppers, with high-quality products at low prices – helping our customer’s money go further which is a key consideration for so many at the moment.”

“We are keen to develop a scheme that positively contributes to the town centre and local community.

“We will therefore be involving local people throughout the planning process as we believe it is vital for the community to be given the opportunity to help shape the plans.”

More details on plans for the new Aldi will be provided by the supermarket chain as part of a public consultation launching in the coming weeks.

As part of this consultation, the local community will be invited to provide feedback on the proposals, which will be used to inform the planning application.
