Pershore Market greengrocer to close after 47 years

Ken & Jen Mason and Daughters at Pershore Market is to close, having served the community since 1976.

Debbie Mason, who runs the shop alongside sister Mandy, has decided to call it a day and enjoy retirement.

She said: “We have been doing it for 47 years and we have got a bit tired now and we need to enjoy what we have been working for, so why not now.

“It’s the early mornings really, we have to be up at 2am to go and secure the best fresh produce and then we will be working through until 5pm."

The shop was opened in 1976 by husband and wife, Ken and Jen Mason.

With help from their daughters (Angela, Debbie, Mandy and Sandra) they built a successful business in the area, opening two additional shops, on Pershore High Street and Bakers Arcade.

When Ken died in 1996, the family decided to put all their attention into the Pershore Market venue.

Debbie explained they have been unable to find a buyer and so the stall will close for good come 4.30pm on Saturday, May 27.

“We can’t get anybody to take it on which is a shame because it’s a really good business,” she said.

“The support we have had since announcing the closure has been lovely,.

“It is really going to be missed, I’m sure.”

News of the closure has been met with a mix of emotions by the shop’s Facebook followers.

Joanne Holman said: “We will miss you all very much, such as fantastic stall with a wonderful bunch of people.

“Hope you all have a great retirement, you all deserve it, and thank you for the last 47 years.”

Regular customer Marion Tunwell added: “Been shopping at your family greengrocer shops since we moved to Pershore in 1978.

“It will be hard to let go, for all of us.

“Wishing you every happiness as you retire. We shall miss you.”

And Julie Harvey said: “You have all done an amazing job and carried on in your mum and dad’s footsteps and should be very proud of what you have done for the community.”

On the final two days of trading, the shop will play host to singers and be offering food provided by a local deli.

Looking ahead to what’s next, Debbie said: “I’m going to do a bit of travelling and Mandy is planning to take some time off to spend with her grandkids before looking for a part-time job.”
