TRAVELLERS entered the playing fields of a school in Droitwich.

Police officers were seen outside Droitwich Spa High School in Briar Mill after travellers made their way into the school's grounds.

Officers arrived on the scene at 4pm to prevent further vehicles from entering the field through its gates near the bus bay.

An eyewitness who saw the events unfold on Sunday (May 7) said they saw loads of caravans outside Rivers Leisure Centre and the school.

They said multiple cars were having to turn around on Briar Mill to avoid just before the school because the road was blocked by vehicles.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Police received a report of travellers entering the playing fields of the Droitwich High School in Briar Mill in Droitwich.

"Police attended the school and prevented any further vehicles from entering the playing field.

"The travellers who had entered the playing field left by 4.30pm.

"The Safer Neighbourhood team spoke with the headmaster, who sent his thanks to the officers for their response."

Droitwich Spa High School has praised the police for acting swiftly. 

Jon Brooks, headmaster, said: “The school would like to place on public record how swiftly and effectively the Police acted to assist us in securing our site after locks were broken near the bus bay.”

The eyewitness added: "There are lots of caravans at the Rivers Leisure Centre and outside the high school.

"The police seem to be moving them on.

"It looked like they were trying to get through the gate onto the school grounds.

"The gate next to the bus lay by at the school."
