WORRIED people spoke of their shock after the alleged attempted murder of an elderly woman along the banks of the River Severn.

People enjoying a Sunday walk along the picturesque riverbanks were disturbed to find Kleve Walk cordoned off by police with officers standing guard.

The 71-year-old woman is in a critical condition in hospital with multiple stab wounds.

A 56 year-old-man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The woman was attacked in Kleve Walk in the early hours of this morning (Sunday, May 7), and is now being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

A police cordon was established along the riverside path between Copenhagen Street car park and Diglis Parade.

Police were called shortly after 2am, and officers immediately responded.

The incident has shocked people in South Quay enjoying a weekend stroll by the River Severn.

A couple who went for a morning walk said: “We had heard something had happened but we had no idea it was here until just now.”

A little further down a group that was sat by the river said they were shocked by the news.

One said: "We've seen the news on the Worcester News website. It is very distressing to hear."

Another person sitting by the riverside said: “We have seen what’s happened and we can’t believe it. 

“Police are up there blocking off the pathway.”

Police patrols have been increased in the area to offer reassurance to people who have spoken of their shock.

People were also warned the riverside between Quay Street and Diglis Parade was to remain cordoned off throughout the day.

A police officer at Diglis Parade said: “This will be here for the foreseeable. It just makes it easier to divert people for the time being.”

Superintendent Rebecca Love said there was no ongoing risk to people.

“We understand the concerning nature of this incident and have officers in the area both to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to the local community.

“Officers responded to the incident very quickly and apprehended a man. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in police custody.

"Our enquiries are ongoing, and we are treating this as an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the wider public.

“We are aware this location is extremely popular and want people to be able to visit it and feel safe.

"Therefore you will see an increase in police presence but I can reassure you there is no ongoing risk to the public.”
