FEARS for schoolchildren's safety have been voiced after a crash left a safety railing on a busy road bent out of shape.

Children walking to Stanley Road primary school will pass the buckled railing on Midland Road with people warning it is not fit for purpose.

Cllr Lynn Denham, Worcestershire County and Worcester City councillor, said it needs urgent attention.

She said: "I reported this to Worcestershire County Council's Highways and Travel team yesterday, but it probably needs urgent attention.

"It is not safe for drivers or Stanley Road School children."

Cllr Denham claims previous damage to the railing on Midland Road took a long time to fix.

She said: "This is not the first time that something has happened with these railings and it took a very long time for it to be fixed before.

"I drove past the area on the weekend and noticed the state the railing is in and it looks quite dangerous.

"It is right in front of a major entrance to Stanley Road School. God forbid the possibility of a child being anywhere near it with metal sticking out like it is."

In November 2021, a lorry reversed and crushed the safety railing in front of the path to Stanley Road Primary School.

Lorraine Adams, the headteacher at Stanley Road primary, said: "I arrived in school at 7.30am on Friday, April 28 and the railing was intact.

"I had to do a home visit to check on a family during the morning, around 10.30am, and the railing had been damaged by then.

"This is the second time since I have been the head that the railing has been damaged.

"This is a very dangerous situation, as it could happen as our families are making their way to school.

"To make matters worse, we no longer have a crossing patrol on Midlands Road, and families find themselves having to spy their opportunity to cross on a very busy road.

"Thank goodness the railing is there as if it wasn't, then our school gates and/or railings would be damaged or even worse a child or a member of the public."

West Mercia Police could not find any incident reported to them regarding the damage to the railing.

Worcestershire County Council's Highways and Maintenance team are taking action following the report.
