A 'DANGEROUS' junction will close for three nights as roadworks get underway to create new markings.

Changes to the controversial Copcut junction in Droitwich will begin later this month after the council finishes observing the area.

The current load of roadworks has been in place at the junction since September 29 while the county council reviewed the road markings.

The review came after the junction received a spate of crashes, with one incident causing a cyclist to be taken to hospital with severe injuries and the road to close for several hours.

Residents have been calling for changes and describing the junction as an “accident waiting to happen” since the road layout was changed in 2021.

Worcestershire County Council said: "Following observations of traffic behaviour at the junction and after a thorough safety audit process, the county council will be amending the junction to create a right-turn-only lane into Copcut Lane from the A38 travelling southbound towards Worcester."

The three-night closure will occur between Monday, April 24 and Thursday, April 27 between 8pm and 6am.

It will allow existing road markings to be removed and new road markings to be put in place, including hatching, red screed and reflective road studs.

The signage on the stretch will also be altered, bollards to be installed and optimisation of the traffic signals for the new junction layout.

After the works have been completed further traffic observations will be undertaken, and it is anticipated that all temporary traffic management will be removed on 28th April.

Some changes to the junction have already been made with the extension of a 40mph speed limit on Pulley Lane.

Copcut Junction was the subject of a county council review in 2021 following two major crashes, with many citing works carried out in September 2020 as a partial cause.

Although the investigation found the previous layout was not at fault, the council still decided to alter the junction.

The northbound A38 became a single lane with an extended right turn into Pulley Lane.

The southbound side retained two lanes with a slightly longer merge length.

However, this proved not to have worked, and the junction underwent another review.
