POLICE swooped on a city road today in what residents said they thought was a drugs raid.

Eyewitnesses said there was a large police presence in the Arboretum.

Residents said they were left without electricity and believe the power was turned off during the raid.

One witness said they saw officers force entry to a home in Chestnut Street at approximately 10am this morning.

They said they saw officers leaving a property with six large bags of what they believed were cannabis plants.

The eyewitness said: "They put the door through at 10am this morning.

"National Grid turned the power off for the whole street. They came out with six big bags of plants this afternoon.

"Police have locked the door and left national grid there with a big hole dug in the pavement.

"Police said it was following a tip off."

At 5.10pm, National Grid employees were on site working on a large hole on the pavement, but said they were unable to comment on what happened earlier today.

A Worcester News journalist spoke with residents on Chestnut Street who had also heard about the raid.

One resident said: "I was alerted to the fact we had no electricity this morning. We were not actually in at the time of the incident, but we heard there was a large police presence involving something to with drugs.

“We were without power earlier today, but we now have our power restored.”

Another resident also confirmed seeing a large police presence in the area.

They said: "I live just down the road and we saw lots of police here this morning. I have no idea what happened."

Cllr Jenny Barnes, Worcester City Councillor for Arboretum ward, said residents had concerns about drugs in roads and alleys surrounding Chestnut Street.

She said:" There have been regular reports around the area and a lot of residents are actually really worried about it.

"I have heard stories of people walking home down alleyways in the ward and have clearly seen drug deals happening.

"I have also heard a lot of reports of this happening along the canal."
