A bridge is set to close for weeks following a fatal crash in which a father-of-six died.

Harry Smith, 33 and from Worcester, died after a crash at Eckington Bridge after a car left the road and entered the River Avon last summer.

Now, the bridge is to be closed for four weeks to allow council staff to rebuild the parapet.

Since the crash, on August 26, West Mercia Police has continued to investigate the incident.

A silver BMW and a red Vauxhall Astra collided on the bridge near Pershore at around 4am with the BMW falling into the river.

Officers attended alongside West Midlands Ambulance Service and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue.

Mr Smith was recovered from the water but died at the scene.

Another man, a 38-year-old from Worcester, climbed out of the water and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving.

In February this year, a spokesman for West Mercia Police confirmed he had been released under investigation, with no charges yet made.

Police are continuing to work to establish who was driving the BMW.

Shortly after the fatal crash, Mr Smith's family paid tribute to him, describing his as a devoted dad, son, nephew, brother and boyfriend.

“Harry was the light of the party and would do anything for anybody,” said Harry’s mum Shirley and her partner Gerry.

“We would like to thank everyone paying their respects at this sad time. Harry will have a send-off fit for a king.

“I miss you so much my boy, love you loads, my heart is broken.”

However, there have not yet been any charges.

Eckington Bridge will close for repairs for four weeks from July 25, Worcestershire County Council's highways team has confirmed.
