AN older model of car is being targeted by burglars in a series of mysterious raids which have left bemused police officers scratching their heads.

West Mercia Police is still investigating why anyone would want to steal a 2014 Vauxhall Coras as part of a regional trend identified by police.

One 2014 Corsa was stolen from Percheron Way, Droitwich on Saturday, March 4 and another 2014 model from Badsey Lane, Evesham in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, March 16).

Police have not yet recovered either car.

Other, similar thefts have been identified across the wider region.

The Evesham 'car key burglary' involved forced entry through a back door, the keys to the car being stolen followed by the car itself.

DI Dave Knight of South Worcestershire Proactive CID said the force was not yet able to provide any information as to where these vehicles were being taken or why they were being targeted.

"It forms part of a wider picture where older Corsas are being targeted," he said.

The latest figures show there were 897 residential burglaries between February last year and February this year, a 3 per cent increase on the previous year when there were 871.

These residential burglaries include any offences within the 'deeds of the property' including sheds and outbuildings.

The advice from West Mercia Police remains to contact 999 in the event of a burglary in progress.

This allows the force to rapidly deploy resources to the scene of the offence and increases the chance of officers apprehending suspects.
