Hundreds of people have shared an appeal to find a “nervous” cat a new home.
Monty arrived at the Worcestershire branch of the RSPCA two months ago, coming from a multi-cat household where he had to fight for food and territory.
The two-year-old black and white cat spent the first few days hiding in his bed, but staff expected him to slowly come round.
Unfortunately, this has not been the case.
“Such is his distress at being in the cattery, he is now hissing, spitting, growling and lashing out,” said a staff member at The Holdings in Kempsey.
“We are noticing a marked deterioration in his behaviour with each day that passes.
“He is desperately unhappy; he hates the noise, the activity, the scent of the other cats.”
Monty has responded to one member of staff, on occasion, accepting treats and allowing her to stroke his head.
But his behaviour has put people off spending time with him, meaning he has got more and more defensive.
In a bid to find him a more suitable place to live, the RSPCA took to social media to share Monty’s story.
At the time of writing, more than 640 people have shared the Facebook post.
“It's a big ask; he's not an easy cat, but here at RSPCA Worcester, we believe that there is someone for every cat, so we won't give up on him,” added the staff member.
“Monty is one of our more challenging cats, and we are worried about the impact that being in the cattery long-term is having on his mental well-being.
“He really needs a calm, quiet, adult-only home, with no other pets, where he can decompress and unwind, in order to give him his best chance.”
