A SIGN that is supposed to direct people towards Worcester Cathedral is facing the wrong way.

The sign on the corner of Commandery Road and London Road has an arrow directing people down Commandery Road and onto Bath Road - but the iconic city landmark is in another direction.

Cllr Lynn Denham, Worcester city councillor for Cathedral ward, said it is important to point tourists in the correct direction when they visit the city.

She said: "We should not be misleading tourists, we should be pointing them in the right direction to find the Cathedral.

"No matter what colour the signposts are or how decorated they are, they are of no use if they are leading people in the wrong direction."

Cllr Denham visited the area on Friday (February 24) to check the signs after first being made aware of issues before Christmas.

She said: "Before Christmas, I was approached by some local residents that said that they had noticed some signs facing the wrong direction.

"The resident said they approached the city council but had not had a reply, so I picked up on that and I have been in touch with the officers involved in the city centre and tourism.

"I came down today to see if this sign was pointing the right way and this one certainly isn't."

A spokesperson for Worcester City Council acknowledged that the sign needed adjusting.

They said: “These fingerposts are designed in a way to allow an element of movement, to make them more robust if accidentally knocked.

"We are aware that this sign does need adjusting and we are arranging for this work to be done as soon as possible.”
