Human waste is regularly found on A38 Roman Way says litter picker

Clive Shearman, of the Droitwich Spa Litter Squad, has highlighted the issues of a "small minority of lorry drivers".

Mr Shearman is a former paramedic who regularly volunteers with litter picking around the Droitwich area and beyond.

He said: "We are well aware this is a very small minority of lorry drivers doing this, but it really is disgusting.

"Every weekend we usually find discarded toilet tissue, bags of excrement and bottles of urine which get thrown down the embankment.

"It is tough as most of the drivers are behaving properly and would not dream of doing this, but it is becoming a real issue."

Mr Shearman said the fact that the waste is being placed in bags and bottles means it will take "years" to decompose if not disposed of.

He said: "We understand that if you have to go, you have to go. But disposing of waste in any of the bins along the stretch of the road is a better option that throwing it in the bushes.

"When this sort of thing is in bags and other forms of packaging, it obviously is not going to decompose any time soon and can remain there for years if not disposed of.

"Wychavon District Council are brilliant and help with this as much as they can, but it is certainly an issue.

"We have also raised our concerns previously with the Road Haulage Association."

A spokesperson for Wychavon District Council praised the efforts of the volunteer litter pickers.

They said: “We appreciate the hard work and effort that the litter-picking volunteers put into keeping Wychavon clear of rubbish, but this is something nobody should have to clear up.

"We urge anybody who finds human waste to report it for it to be dealt with quickly and appropriately.”

A spokesperson for the RHA also condemned the actions, but also highlighted the "chronic lack of safe and secure parking facilities for lorry drivers".

They said: “People leaving mess behind is completely unacceptable. It’s a horrible situation for communities to have to put up with and we condemn those individuals.

“There’s a chronic lack of safe and secure parking facilities for lorry drivers. They’re restricted by law on the amount of time they can spend behind the wheel and will often have nowhere to go once their shift is over.

“Thousands every night are forced to sleep in laybys, industrial estates, and residential areas without access to toilets, showers, and hot food.

"They deserve better – working with government and local authorities to secure more facilities for lorry drivers out on the road is a key priority for us.”
