TWO pensioners were left with no gas and struggling to keep warm during freezing temperatures for days after they claim their supply was unexpectedly cut off.

Ron Donald, 75, and his wife, 71, were one of two houses left with no gas for three days after Cadent tried to replace the older gas mains in Gilmour Crescent, Claines.

Mr Donald claims he was not given prior knowledge of the mains being turned off and was concerned for his wife's wellbeing as she had only recently left the hospital with six broken and four displaced ribs.

In response to the couple's claims, Cadent said it had to turn the gas supply off to replace old pipes, which usually only takes a day, but in some rare cases, it can take longer.

Mr Donald said: "I am recovering from prostate cancer, my wife recently got out of hospital - they know the situation we are in.

"I was more concerned with my wife.

"There was nothing I could do apart from making sure she was warm.

"We thankfully have a microwave, so we did not starve.

"To leave two vulnerable pensioners with no gas for three days - no cooking, no water, no heating facilities.

"How would you like it?"

The couple now has gas back but said it has taken over a week for the company to fill the hole outside of their house, and Cadent still has not cleaned up the dirt on their windows and drive.

A spokesperson for Cadent said if gas replacement takes longer than expected, they explain this to customers and help with alternative sources of heating or cooking.

A spokesperson added: "There have been some extra challenges in this particular instance due to the position of the gas pipes under the driveway.

"We have wanted to minimise the impact in a way the customer is happy with.

"We require our operatives to keep work areas as tidy as they can, and we will carry out a complete, thorough clean next week.

"While we try our best, we don’t always get it right.

"We apologise for any confusion or misunderstanding here, and we will be looking to offer compensation."
