A MAN who attacked his former girlfriend leaving her with a gash to her head before assaulting police officers is appealing against his conviction. 

We previously reported Richard Howlett, of High House Drive, Inkberrow, and previously of Cowl Street, Evesham, was convicted following a trial in November. 

The 40-year-old is currently serving a 48-week jail sentence. 

Howlett appeared on videolink from HMP Hewell to Worcester Crown Court on Friday, (February 10), for a case management hearing. 

Jason Aris, defending, said Howlett is appealing against his conviction for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by beating.

Mr Aris said: "The defence is the allegations are fabricated."

Aimee Parkes, prosecuting, said Lisa Duffy, the victim in the case, should be granted special measures to be able to give her evidence behind a screen. 

That application was granted. 

His Honour Judge Jonathan Salmon said it was a matter of urgency to find an imminent date for the appeal, given the defendant was in custody. 

Judge Salmon told Howlett his appeal, scheduled to last a day, would be heard at Worcester Crown Court on March 10.

The judge told Howlett: "A circuit judge and two magistrates will consider the evidence in this case and make a decision as to whether you are guilty or not guilty of the offences you appeal.

"At present, you remain in custody."

"Thank you your honour," Howlett said before the hearing ended.

During the trial magistrates heard in the first attack the victim had been thrown around "like a ragdoll", before being pushed into a cupboard when she suffered the head wound. 

That attack took place in the victim's home in Droitwich at 9pm on September 3 last year.

In the second attack the following morning Howlett pushed the victim into the hallway connecting with a bannister and injuring her shoulder. 

The victim broke down in tears recalling the attacks in the trial. 

"Things got out of hand," she said.

"He smashed me into the cupboard. He leaned over me, I thought he going to hit me."

Howlett was also previously sentenced for two assault by beating of an emergency worker charges after the defendant admitted those.

Those offence occured when Howett thrashed around violently with punches and kicks connecting with officers Benjamin Sly and Nick Garth when they came to arrest him. 

During his sentence Howlett was also given a three-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.
