ROADWORKS have been described as causing 'chaos' with one driver having to reverse all the way down the road when he met an oncoming car.

The roadworks are affecting Lansdowne Crescent, causing difficulties for drivers today (Sunday) because of the narrowed carriageway.

Meanwhile, Lansdowne Lane, at the top of the Crescent, is totally closed with diversions in place.

CityFibre is working in Lansdowne Crescent between January 13 and February 9 according to Worcestershire County Council Highways with a diversion route in place. A footway has been put in place for pedestrians on the Crescent but, because of the work which narrows the road, two cars cannot pass abreast.

One driver told the Worcester News: "I was driving along Lansdowne Crescent towards Lansdowne Road from the direction of Rainbow Hill. As I drove around the corner a lot the carriageway was closed off to my left and there was not room for two cars to pass side-by-side.

"I couldn't reverse as there were other cars behind me on the bend, waiting for me. The other driver in front of me had to reverse all the way down Lansdowne Crescent almost to the junction of Lansdowne Road. I'm not a mind-reader but the other driver looked a tad upset and gave me the evil eye. But what was I supposed to do?

"I'm not on expert on traffic management, but it seemed like perhaps they needed temporary lights or workmen with 'stop' and 'go' signs'.

"It was chaos, a real bottleneck for drivers. I wouldn't recommend any learner drivers going that way, that's for sure. That bend on the Crescent near the entrance to Lansdowne Lane is hard enough to negotiate at the best of times but I'm sure the work is necessary."

Another resident said, at one stage, drivers were heading along the Crescent only to find it was closed and were then having to perform a turn at a difficult point in the road.

However, the road was open in both directions when Worcester News visited the area and cars were able to head in both directions.

A resident told the Worcester News: "Cars are travelling all the way up the length of the road and being forced to turn around and make three point turns in really awkward positions.

"There is a right turn on that road which is closed and the diversion is leading people down Lansdowne Crescent but when the drivers get to the end of the road it’s actually closed."
