Pershore Market will not be demolished to make way for Aldi

Pershore Market has moved to quickly deny rumours that it is set to make way for an Aldi supermarket.

The market has been up for sale for four years but it is business as usual for the time being.

A spokesperson said: “There appear to be Chinese whispers going around regarding Pershore market.

“I can confirm we are not closing down, and we are not being pulled down to build an Aldi.”

They added some stallholders will be retiring in the coming months, with details to be announced.

“There will be some people retiring this year and we will post who and when nearer the time, we are very much open so come and pay us a visit,” the spokesperson said.

“There is a huge variety of shops we have our own car park and we are all under one roof.

“Thank you for your continued support.”

Pershore Market has been owned by the Mackaness family since 1967.

The sale was previously being handled by Halls Commercial.

Speaking to the estate agents last June, company director James Mackaness said: “It’s off on a limb, really, and needs someone to love and care for it. We are selling it as a whole and would love to see it carrying on as a working site.

“Traditional markets are on the up – they are enjoying an enormous revival in France and I believe Pershore town centre would drop dead if the market closed.

“We are seeing more empty shops in the High Street, not just in Pershore but all over and it’s important to keep it going.

"The people of Pershore view the market not as ‘our market’ but theirs.”

Halls Commercial stated that the site is 2.33 acres in size and offers a net income of around £346,000 per year.

It is not clear who is handling the sale of the site now.
