A MISUNDERSTANDING has caused residents to believe an M&S store could be opening in an empty building in Droitwich.

The former Argos building in St Andrews Square, was cleared this week and a letter appeared on its window referencing an M&S Project Management.

However, the poster has led to widespread speculation and excitement that Droitwich could be getting a new M&S Food Hall.

Marks and Spencer has dashed hopes that it is coming to the town confirming it has no plans to move into the building.

When one resident saw the sign, she said: "The Argos in Droitwich has been cleared out and a notice on the window says something about a contract between insurers and M&S Projects.

"Someone please tell me we are getting an M&S food hall."

Other residents were a bit more sceptical that the major brand could be opening up in the town.

One said: "It is nowhere near big enough for an M&S Food Hall.

"It will probably remain empty or it will be a charity shop or hairdresser.

"It is just not big enough for anything we actually need."

Another added: "There is an M&S Food Hall at the petrol station."

The town centre Argos originally closed due to covid but did not reopen once restrictions were lifted.

It has remained empty ever since

In December 2022, M&Co, which is also located in St Andrews Square, unexpectedly permanently closed its doors.

Residents have been suggesting what stores they would like to see open up in the town centre.

One said: "I would like an Iceland in there or in the empty M&Co.

"We have not got anything like that in town."

Whereas another added: "We do not need another food shop we need clothes shops, especially for children."

It is believed M&S Project Management is helping the current landlord empty out the building.

There are currently no planning applications submitted for the building Wychavon District Council has confirmed.
