THE green light was given for the installation of broadband poles on a Droitwich estate despite residents' objections.

Scores of people on the Westacre estate were "up in arms" about the proposed installation of full-fibre broadband.

They argued the broadband poles would be an "eyesore" to the area, and there was also confusion as to why they could not be installed underground.

Defending the poles, FullFibre said it had worked hard on the design to keep impact to a minimum.

Derek Sutton decided to set up a petition after speaking to his fellow residents on the estate who were also unhappy with the installation.

After hearing the green light had been given to the plans, Mr Sutton said: "Most people I have talked to say, 'well, I have tried, and I have done my best'.

"You cannot argue with the government.

"People have now accepted it is done."

It was estimated that over a third of the estate had signed the petition.

However, there were not enough signatures to prevent the installation from happening.

The consultation date for full fibre ended on Monday, January 16 and work has already begun on Low Hill Road.

Within the coming years, it is estimated that thousands of poles will be installed across the UK to reach the level of full fibre access required by the UK government.

A spokesperson for FullFibre said: "We have worked hard to design our build with the minimum impact on the local area.

"During the extended consultation process we have sent a letter to every premise that will be visually impacted or served by the new pole, and it is our sincere belief that we do more than our competitors to make sure the community are aware of what's happening, why it is happening and to have a chance to influence the exact location.

"We have previously extended the consultation period from December 30, 2022, to January 16, 2023, however, should there be any suggested amendments until the specific pole has been installed, we will continue to consider them.

"We have also already amended the location of three of the planned poles as a result of local residents’ suggestions."
