IN 1996 - Three Lions was topping the charts, Trainspotting was a hit at the box office and Tickle Me Elmo was the top toy.

And litter pickers in Evesham were transported back in time after discovering a 27-year-old Big Mac carton chucked in shrubbery on St Richards Road.

Despite being discarded in 1996, around a quarter of a mile away from McDonald's, the carton remained intact.

Laura Van Toller, organiser at Anti-Litter Evesham, found the item on Thursday (January 26) evening.

Ms Toller said fast food rubbish is one of the most common things she tends to pick up in the area.

"We have a Costa, KFC, and McDonalds, and they are all regular items we find.

"Sometimes we find Burger King or Starbucks packaging, which we do not even have in the town.

"People will get their fast food through their car window, so it goes out the same window."

Ms Toller found the item while picking as part of her own My Rubbish January where she set herself the goal of picking up rubbish every day in January.

During the month, she was on average picking up a bag a day of rubbish from across Evesham.

Her aim was to see if the amount of litter seen in Evesham would change based on if someone was picking up rubbish every day.

But what she found was that the place still did not get cleaner despite her efforts.

"Every day there are McDonald's cups, crisp packets or cigarette butts.

"I wish I could say Evesham was cleaner after this, but there was something replacing the thing I picked up the day before every day.

"I was just maintaining it.

"Week two into this made me quite depressed.

"I just felt like, what was the point?

"Now, though, I really feel like I have achieved something as I have still stuck to it."

Anti-Litter Evesham is a group of volunteers who pick up litter across Evesham on a monthly basis.

The next group litter pick will be on February 11 at 10am.
