AN elderly woman has revealed "going early to bed and a drop of whisky" is her top tip for a long life after she celebrated her 100th birthday.

Loni Gumbley celebrated her milestone birthday with friends and family at Corbett House Nursing Home in Droitwich.

Nursing home staff have described the 100-year-old as a "pleasure to look after" and said she was delighted to receive a card from King Charles marking the special occasion.

Mrs Gumbley was born in Hamburg, Germany, on January 21, 1923, and lived in the area during the Second World War.

She shared her memories from that time, saying: "The war in Hamburg was terrible.

"I was bombed out, and Hamburg was flattened.

"It was a difficult time during the war."

In 1945, she married her husband, who was serving in the army at the time, and said they both decided to move to England because of how badly Hamburg was damaged.

Once in England, the two had their only son Peter in 1946, and Mrs Gumbley decided to run a hardware business.

Her son Peter said his mum "had a busy working life", and after running her business and their home, she then progressed to work in an accountancy office.

Since, she has enjoyed retirement, with her favourite activities being knitting and reading the newspaper - activities she still enjoys today.

Around a year ago, Mrs Gumbley moved into Corbett House Nursing Home in Corbett Avenue.

On her 100th birthday, Mrs Gumbley said she was "pleased" to receive her card from the King.

Her family joined her to mark the occasion at the care home

Her son added: "When my mum opened her card from the King, she said that she felt it was very special."

“It is a fantastic achievement for her to reach 100.”
