THE moment a group of magnet fishing YouTubers pull an unexploded First World War bomb out of the River Severn has been released.

Peaky Dippers, an amateur group of magnet fishers, have released the YouTube video showing the moment they discovered the bomb shutting down an area of the riverside.

The group reveal they were about to write off their visit to Worcester as a "terrible day" as they did not find anything of interest.

That was until Nigel Lamford, age 51, pulled out World War One artillery shell on South Quay on Wednesday, December 28.

Mr Lamford said: "I was just saying what a terrible day it had been, and then that" before the camera zooms in on the bomb.

Mr Lamford added: "It's going to mean shutting the town off.

"I've just pulled out an 18-pounder."

While showing the viewers what the bomb looked like, Mr Lamford said: "Oh well, looks like we're leaving early today, flipping heck...not good, not good at all.

After finding the artillery shell, the group cordoned off South Quay and rang the police

On the phone to the police, Mr Lamford said: "I'm magnet fishing and I've pulled out an 18-pound artillery shell. A small bomb".

Before the police arrived at the scene, the group started to redirect people away from the area.

Ushering people towards Browns on South Quay, one member of the group said: "Do you want to go round that way, we've pulled a bomb out the water.

"An unexploded bomb, so I would walk around that side".

Police put in a 100-metre cordon in the area once they arrived at the scene.

Despite police cordoning off the area, people were still trying to walk through South Quay but were left feeling stumped when they saw the tape.

Mr Lamford said: "People are still persistently trying to come through, but they always do, unfortunately."

Police officers thanked the team for calling 999 as soon as they found it.

A police officer said: "Either you found it or somebody else will find it 50 or 60 years down the line.

"All it takes is some idiot to pull it out, but you're all sensible".

However, the team said they do worry about young people picking up the hobby and not realising what they've found - especially as the bomb looked like a flask.
