THERE has been long queues on a number of Worcester city centre roads with one driver calling it 'absolute carnage'.

An eyewitness said the city was "gridlocked" as multiple roadworks caused issues in Worcester.

Part of the issues, the eyewitness said, was roadworks for a short section in Bridge Street, just past the traffic lights at Deansway.

Cars were also being diverted away from The Butts which was urgently closed to repair a cable fault.

The driver explained traffic was backing up on the approach to Worcester Bridge due to the roadworks, as the left-hand lane in Bridge Street was closed.

"There has been gridlock," the eyewitness said.

"People were beeping their horns to move to get across to the right-hand lane, to get past."

They are listed as Severn Trent Water roadworks as utility repair and maintenance works, which are scheduled to be completed on Thursday (January 18).

AA traffic maps were showing red, which means vehicles are very slow-moving or not moving at all, on a number of city centre roads including Deansway, Dolday, All Saints Road, North Parade and North Quay.

The issues were even stretching back to Hylton Road, the other side of the river.

Worcestershire County Council said the closure in The Butts is for National Grid to repair the electrical fault.

A National Grid spokesperson said it is carrying out repairs following a fault on an underground cable there.

"Engineers are still working on the repairs which involve replacing around 22 metres of cable.

"They are working as quickly as possible and hope to complete the repairs by this evening and then tarmac the roadway tomorrow (Thursday).

"It is hoped that the road will then be reopened tomorrow afternoon.

"Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused."
