KEY city centre route The Butts has been closed this morning. 

First Worcester has tweeted in the last hour half (7.20am) that a number of its services are not able to stop at The Butts or Foregate Street. 

The AA's live traffic map is showing red, meaning slow or at a stop, on its live traffic map. 

Other nearby routes in the area, including Dolday and All Saints Road, are moving fine.

First Worcester says: "Services 35, 34, 38 and 144 are currently unable to serve The Butts and Foregate Street stops, due to the impromptu closure of The Butts.

"Please expect updates as we receive them."

Jon Fraser, highways manager at Worcestershire County Council, has told us an inspector has been sent out to the area.

 

8:16am UPDATE: Jon Frasier, highways manager, has provided an update that the closure is for National Grid to repair a cable fault by The Hive library.

Worcestershire Highways has tweeted a picture and said the footway remains open past excavation. 

They added: "The Butts, Worcester closed for urgent works by National Grid to repair electrical fault."

Update 2.30pm: A National Grid spokesperson said: "The team advise they are carrying out emergency repairs following a fault on an underground cable there.

"Engineers are still working on the repairs which involve replacing around 22 metres of cable.

"They are working as quickly as possible and hope to complete the repairs by this evening and then tarmac the roadway tomorrow.

"It is hoped that the road will then be reopened tomorrow afternoon.

"Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused."
