PLANS have been revealed to build a new village hall in St Peter’s.

The new building would be built on land behind St Peter’s Baptist Church off Eden Close in Worcester.

Worcester Community Trust, which runs a number of centres across the city, would run a number of training sessions from the new village hall according to the plans submitted to Worcester City Council by the St Peter’s Village Hall Association.

The existing village hall in St Peter’s, home to St Peter’s Parish Council, is owned by neighbouring supermarket Tesco and the association wants to move away from leasing the building to owning and operating a hall on its own.

The drawings also show space for the village hall to expand in the future but this has not been included in the current planning application.

In a message of support, Reverend Andrew Browning from St Peter’s Baptist Church, said: “As a church we want to see excellent provision for our local community and we work hard to achieve this goal through all our activities.

“We have a range of community facilities within our own building and look to help the community as much as we can - such as hosting the St Peter's mass vaccination centre for over 18 months.

“We are situated right next to where the proposed Village Hall will be built and can only see the establishment of this proposed new building as complementing our own provision and becoming a very valuable addition to St Peter's community.”

A statement included with the application said: “The proposed building will not have its own dedicated parking but will share the parking provision at the St Peter’s Church and Tesco supermarket.

“St Peter’s Church has 95 spaces directly adjacent to the site and there is an agreement to use these spaces.

“This is a local facility largely for local people, many of which will walk to the existing community facility, current and past experience shows this to be true.

“There exists free two-and-a-half-hour parking in Tesco’s car park, a matter of yards from the proposed building.

“The existing community facility has no parking provision, but in the 31 years that it has been in use, this has not been a problem, either in the immediate area or in the streets surrounding.”
